My father was diagnosed with an inoperable heart condition that caused low oxygen saturation. He could go home, but he needed oxygen continuously. Apria was suggested to us by the hospital's social worker. We didn't have any experience with medical equipment companies, so we just went with her recommendation. This has turned out to be a big mistake. While I always noticed difficulty in getting through the maze of phone lines to reach customer service, and that they never seemed to be in a hurry to bring additional supplies, the real problems began when my father passed away. I suppose we all react differently to the death of someone close, but for me personally, I wanted to remember him healthy. This meant getting rid of those reminders of his sickness, like the oxygen tanks and various other medical equipment that is littered across my house, either because there's no other place to put it or because it is too heavy for me to lift. Somehow something so simple like picking up their equipment has been impossible for Apria to handle. Many times I can't even get through to a representative, and when I do they say someone will call me back to arrange pick up, which never happens. Now there is also an added worry that we will cross into the next billing cycle with this equipment still sitting here, and of course Medicare denying to pay for it because the patient is deceased. When my father passed away, he was transitioning to hospice care and so Apria's was not the only equipment in our home. That other medical equipment company, who I will not name because I don't want to make this seem like an advertisement, picked up their equipment that same day my father passed, understanding our family wanting to have it gone. And I mention this second company because it proves that there is a medical equipment provider in your area willing and capable to respond to its customers needs. Apria is clearly not that company. I find myself spending an hour or two on the phone with Apria each day, mostly on hold until I mysteriously get bounced to the after hours line in the middle of the day where I either get disconnected or given an opportunity to leave a message that never gets answered. And I call back again until I'm just tired of the process and decide to wait until tomorrow. Just trust me when I say that with everything else you may find yourself going through with the passing of a loved one, you don't need this and shouldn't have to deal with it in what is already a trying time. Find that other medical equipment provider in your area that can meet your needs, and that will display care and respect for its customers and patients. Avoid Apria.
